A pillion rider died on Dennis Street, Sophia, Georgetown, early Friday morning following a collision between a motorcycle and a parked motor car in the vicinity of the Juvenile Holding Centre.

Dead is 39-year-old Henrick Serrao of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the accident occurred at about 03:00hrs and involved motor car PLL 6764, driven by a 22-year-old man of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, and motorcycle CN 4508, ridden by a 44-year-old man of Cummings Lodge. Serrao was the pillion rider on the motorcycle.

Initial investigations revealed that the motorcycle was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of Dennis Street, allegedly at a high rate of speed, when the rider reportedly lost control and collided with a motor car that was stationary on the northern grass parapet of the road.

The impact caused both the rider and Serrao to be flung from the motorcycle onto the roadway, where they sustained injuries to their bodies. Serrao was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police said the motorcyclist left the scene shortly after the accident but was subsequently contacted and arrested. He is assisting with investigations.

CCTV footage from the area was reviewed as part of the ongoing probe. Serrao’s body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Parlour Mortuary as investigations continue.
