A mining incident has claimed the life of a 27-year-old pit man at a gold mining camp in the Upper Demerara River area.
Dead is Mark Anthony Williams of Morashee Village, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at a mining camp located at 13 Miles, Mango Landing.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Williams was working in a mining pit with other workers when heavy rain and strong winds began. During the inclement weather, a tree reportedly fell into the pit and struck Williams about his head, police said.
He was pulled from the pit in an unconscious state and was later found to be unresponsive. Police said the body is being transported out of the area to a mortuary, where it will undergo an official pronouncement and examination.
Investigations are continuing.
