More than 260 contractors have submitted Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to construct government-built homes this year, as the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) ramps up its housing drive with a target of 8,000 houses in 2026.

The update was given on Friday during a site visit to the Success Housing Development on the East Coast of Demerara by CH&PA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Martin Pertab. Three-bedroom homes are under construction at the site, and the visit was part of the agency’s ongoing inspections to ensure quality standards are met and projects are delivered on time.

Dr. Pertab said the large-scale programme requires tight planning and logistics, noting that EOIs have already been advertised and the next focus will be ensuring project sites are ready in the coming weeks.

“We have received over 260 applications for the construction of these houses and we are, now in the evaluation stage where soon we’ll be engaging these contractors to start building,” Pertab said.

He added that the 8,000-house target aligns with the Government’s commitment to deliver 40,000 homes over the next five years.

The CEO also pointed to the $159 billion allocation for the housing sector under Budget 2026, saying the funding places added responsibility on CH&PA to remain proactive and results-driven in delivering tangible outcomes for Guyanese.

Dr. Pertab was joined on the visit by engineers Anthony Ragnauth and Kit Fai Sue, surveyor Shaquille Mayers, and other technical staff.
