Police are investigating the alleged murder of a seven-year-old girl and the attempted murder of her one-year-old brother following a tragic incident on Sunday at Fyrish Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

Dead is Isabella Dabadial, a student of Cooper Primary School. Her younger brother, Ethan, who is one year old, also sustained injuries but survived.

Police have identified the suspect as the children’s mother, 26-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, a ten-day worker of Fyrish Road, Corentyne.

According to preliminary investigations, Shivpersaud allegedly told investigators that she had been under significant emotional strain after her husband left the home several days ago and refused to return.

Police said she further stated that on Sunday morning, April 5, 2026, she woke up and found there was no food in the house. Investigators allege that she then suffocated her seven-year-old daughter.

Police also said the woman admitted that she attempted to kill her infant son, Ethan, but was unsuccessful.

According to investigators, after the incident, Shivpersaud attempted to take her own life. She and the two children were subsequently taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where Isabella was pronounced dead on arrival.

Shivpersaud was treated for her injuries and received sutures. Police said she remains in stable condition at the hospital, where she is being guarded by law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing.
