A river incident along the Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast, has left Lennox Smith, also known as “Uncle Becks,” dead, as Police in Region Two continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the incident occurred on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Karimap Creek, St. Monica, Upper Pomeroon River, and resulted in the death of the 59-year-old gold miner of Kabakaburi Mission.
Preliminary information indicates that Smith had been travelling in a boat earlier that afternoon along the Pomeroon River. A report was later made that he was missing, prompting residents to launch a search. During the search, his body was recovered in the vicinity of Karimap Creek and escorted to the Charity Waterfront.
Police ranks examined the body before it was taken to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said one male is in custody and is assisting with the investigation. Investigations are continuing.
