A man and a woman were hauled before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with possession of 164 grams of ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking.
Devon Grant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and fined $30,000, while Lily Wills pleaded not guilty and was granted $100,000 bail.
Grant and Wills appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs, where the charge was read to them. Following Grant’s guilty plea, the court imposed the custodial sentence and fine. Wills, who denied the offence, was released on bail, and her matter was adjourned to January 9, 2026.
The charge stems from an operation carried out by the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in the vicinity of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
CANU officers, acting on information received, intercepted a motor vehicle and conducted a search during which they found ziploc bags containing a quantity of ecstasy.
CANU reported that the duo was arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters along with the narcotics, which weighed 164 grams.
