Police are investigating an alleged attempted robbery under arms that unfolded on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, around 10:15 hrs, at Brickdam in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Georgetown.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the incident involved an 81-year-old pensioner of Robb Street, Georgetown, who was accompanied by his 79-year-old brother, also of the same address. The two men were reportedly heading to conduct official business when one of two identifiable males—armed with a knife—rode up on a bicycle and attempted to snatch a haversack the elderly man was carrying.
The victim raised an alarm, drawing the attention of members of the public who intervened. During the commotion, a 25-year-old licensed firearm holder who was in the vicinity discharged his weapon in the direction of the suspects. Police said a 13-year-old boy of Albouystown was struck and fell to the ground, while the second suspect escaped in an unknown direction.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and the injured teen was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains hospitalised with a gunshot wound to his gluteal area.
Police said CCTV cameras in the area were identified and are currently being reviewed as the investigation continues. The firearm involved was also secured and lodged pending the outcome of investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
