Human Services Minister meets Palms staff, pushes accountability & better care for elderly residents

Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud on Tuesday met with nurses, supervisors, and members of the administrative team at the Palms Geriatric Home.

Dr. Persaud, who was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Dr. Erica Forte, held the meeting at the Brickdam-based institution as part of ongoing efforts to address operational issues and ensure residents receive proper attention.

During the engagement, the minister addressed concerns surrounding staff attendance, stressing that reliability and teamwork are critical to maintaining quality care for the elderly.

She also underscored the need for residents to consistently receive proper care, including attention to hygiene and nutritious meals.

At the same time, Persaud listened to staff concerns and outlined a number of measures expected to be introduced soon to improve facility operations and offer greater support to nurses.

According to the ministry, the planned changes are intended to create a more efficient and comfortable working environment, with benefits for both staff and residents.

The meeting forms part of the ministry’s wider push for transparency, responsiveness and the continuous improvement of care at the Palms.

Following the engagement, the minister also inspected ongoing works at the facility to ensure the projects remain on schedule.
