The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has launched an internal investigation following the death of a 70-year-old male patient who reportedly jumped from a second-floor ward area on Thursday.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the hospital confirmed that the elderly patient had been admitted on February 8, 2026, after sustaining a self-inflicted injury to the right side of his neck.

According to GPHC, the man underwent emergency surgery, including repair of a right-sided pharyngeal injury and the placement of a tracheostomy. During his hospitalization, he was placed under close medical management and suicide watch, with ongoing psychiatric monitoring and support.

However, on February 26, at approximately 12:41 hrs, the patient reportedly jumped from a second-floor ward area.

Medical personnel responded immediately and transported him to the Accident and Emergency Department, where advanced resuscitative measures were initiated. Clinical assessment revealed severe traumatic injuries. Despite aggressive interventions, including ventilatory support, administration of blood products, and vasopressor therapy, his condition deteriorated.

He subsequently went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 14:10 hrs.

The hospital said an internal review has been initiated to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. GPHC noted that it remains committed to maintaining patient safety, strengthening monitoring systems, and ensuring that patients requiring mental health support receive appropriate supervision and care.

The hospital also expressed concern about what it described as a recent increase in suicide attempt cases being managed at the institution, including among vulnerable groups.

It said clinical teams are actively providing enhanced monitoring and working closely with national mental health services and relevant partners to ensure timely intervention and support.

GPHC extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during what it described as a difficult time.

The hospital further urged members of the public experiencing emotional distress to seek help from qualified healthcare professionals or available support services.
