Police have launched an investigation into a deadly incident aboard a cargo vessel docked at a wharf on Water Street, Cummingsburg, Georgetown, which claimed the lives of four crew members on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the incident occurred around 18:30 hrs and involved the men entering a confined area in the engine room during what was described as an inspection.

The deceased were identified as Brandon Deonarine, 18, a seaman of Support, East Bank Demerara; Nerwaine Persaud, 57, a boat captain of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara; Dominic Alexis, 33, a seaman of De Kendren, West Coast Demerara; and Getindra Sanchara, 25, an engineer of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

According to preliminary investigations, the four crew members were inspecting a dry space in the lower section of the vessel’s engine room when they were reportedly exposed to suspected noxious fumes and collapsed.

An alarm was subsequently raised by other crew members, prompting an emergency response. Emergency Medical Technicians and officers from the Guyana Fire Service responded and assisted in removing the men from the vessel.

The men were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by a doctor. Their bodies are at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations.

The GPF said investigations are ongoing.
