Five men were detained on Friday afternoon after police intercepted a vehicle linked to the alleged theft of cheese from a supermarket along the East Coast of Demerara.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the alleged simple larceny occurred around 13:25 hrs on February 27, 2026, at a supermarket located on La Bonne Intention Public Road.
Initial enquiries revealed that two males entered the establishment, where one of them allegedly removed eight packs of cheese valued at $8,640 and concealed them on his person. The act was reportedly observed on the supermarket’s CCTV system.
Police said the suspects, along with other occupants of a motor car, attempted to leave the scene shortly after. Ranks responding to the report intercepted the vehicle at Triumph Public Road.
The five men were escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station. They include a 48-year-old construction worker of Campbellville, Georgetown, who was identified as the driver; a 35-year-old construction worker of Stevedore Housing Scheme, South Ruimveldt; a 28-year-old man of Section ‘C’, Sophia; a 35-year-old gold miner of Princess Street, Lodge; and a 19-year-old stevedore of South Ruimveldt.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a cutlass, which has since been lodged for investigation.
