A betting shop along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) was left badly damaged on Monday morning after a fire of unknown origin tore through the business.
The fire, of unknown origin, occurred at about 05:30 hours on Monday at the establishment operated by a 37-year-old woman of Haslington.
According to preliminary investigations, the woman had secured the business at around 16:30 hours on Sunday, March 15, and later went home.
At about 05:30 hours the following morning, she was alerted by a relative that the building was on fire. When she checked, she saw the structure engulfed in flames.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was contacted and responded promptly, extinguishing the blaze before the building was completely destroyed. Despite this, the interior of the building sustained significant damage, with several monitors and other electronic equipment destroyed by the fire.
