Brazilian miner found dead at Waiamo Backdam in Region Seven

Law enforcement officials in Region Seven have launched an investigation into the death of a Brazilian national who was found motionless at Waiamo Backdam, Cuyuni River, on New Year’s Day.

Dead is 55-year-old miner Jose Cloves Deas Francisco. According to reports, the man had been imbibing earlier and was last seen at about 07:00h at his apartment.

Police said that at approximately 10:00h the same day, Francisco was discovered motionless on the steps of the apartment. A report was subsequently made to the police, who responded to the location.

Investigators noted that an initial examination of the body revealed no marks of violence. The miner was then escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination, which is expected to determine the cause of death. Police said investigations remain ongoing.
