The body of a 28-year-old fisherman from Corriverton, Berbice, was recovered on Tuesday, two days after he reportedly fell overboard during a fishing trip on the Corentyne River.

Dead is Alladin Dookie of Number 77 Housing Scheme. Speaking with reporters, Dookie’s wife, Amrita Singh, said her husband left home on Wednesday, March 18, to go out to sea with other crew members and was expected to return after five days.

She said she was later informed by her mother on Saturday that Dookie had fallen overboard near Orealla Village and had gone missing.

According to Singh, searches were carried out in the area for several days before his body was eventually found at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the vicinity of Siparuta Village.

His body was subsequently recovered, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted. Singh said she had hoped her husband would have been found alive.

She also noted that Dookie had been working in the fishing industry for the past seven years and that nothing like this had ever happened before.

Dookie leaves to mourn his wife, four children, and other relatives and friends.

Reports are that on Saturday, March 21, at around 5:59 p.m., Dookie and three other men were fishing near Orealla Village when the incident occurred.

He was reportedly captaining the boat and was attempting to start the engine by pulling the choke while leaning over the side of the vessel when he accidentally fell into the river.

He was seen going under the water and did not resurface. A search party was later organised, but despite efforts in the area, Dookie remained missing until his body was found on Tuesday.
