The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) says the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge remains safe and fully reliable for public use, following concerns from members of the public about pavement undulations observed along sections of the roadway.

In a statement, the ministry reported that ongoing monitoring of settlement observation points on the bridge has shown no abnormal settlement in the bridge foundations, with all data indicating the structure remains stable.

The MoPW explained that the undulations observed on the side span of the main bridge are linked to localised variations in surface flatness arising during the asphalt paving process.

The ministry stressed that the issue is confined to the pavement surface layer and does not affect the bridge’s structural integrity or load-bearing capacity.

Meanwhile, the undulation noted near the east approach bridge abutment was attributed to the characteristics of the transition zone where the road embankment fill meets the concrete abutment.

According to the ministry, differences in material properties, particularly between sand fill and concrete, can lead to varying settlement behaviour, creating a temporary elevation difference that appears as a surface undulation.

The ministry said the contractor has been instructed to carry out remedial works in the near term to restore a smoother driving surface and improve travel comfort.

The MoPW also acknowledged the public’s vigilance and assured that it remains committed to continuous monitoring, professional management, and routine maintenance of the bridge and its related facilities to uphold public safety.
