Berbice tragedy: Police say 7-year-old girl was suffocated by mother

Police have said that seven-year-old Isabella Dabadial of Fyrish, Corentyne, Berbice, was allegedly suffocated, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her death.

In an updated statement, police said the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to preliminary investigations, the child was allegedly suffocated at her home by her 26-year-old mother. Police said the woman also allegedly attempted to kill her one-year-nine-month-old son.

Investigators further stated that after the alleged act, the suspect reportedly injured herself and was subsequently taken, along with the two children, to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.

Isabella was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The suspect was admitted as a patient, where she was treated and remains in a stable condition under police guard.

Police said the body of the child is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
