The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an investigation into the escape of Randy James Smith from lawful custody at Matthews Ridge in the North West District.

Police said Smith was being held in connection with the alleged rape of a child under the age of 16. Investigators have since completed the probe into the sexual offence, and the suspect was expected to be formally charged.

The GPF said all necessary measures are now being taken to locate and recapture the escaped prisoner.

In the meantime, the Force is urging members of the public who may have information that can assist in Smith’s swift recapture to come forward and share details with the police.
