The Office of the President says the Council of the University of Guyana (UG) has identified veteran Caribbean diplomat and scholar Sir Ronald Sanders as the prospective Chancellor of the University.

In a statement on the matter, the Office of the President noted that Section 9 of the University of Guyana Act provides for the Chancellor to be elected by the University’s Council.

The position became vacant following the completion of the tenure of Professor John Edward Greene, who was praised for what the government described as “distinguished” service and for contributions to UG’s development and standing.

According to the statement, Sir Ronald brings an “exceptional record of scholarship, public service, and international engagement” that aligns with the University’s push for academic excellence and stronger global visibility.

His academic background includes serving as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford and earning a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Sussex. He has also received honorary awards, including an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies, an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Guyana, and has held fellowships at institutions such as the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (University of London) and Massey College (University of Toronto).

On the diplomatic front, the Office of the President described Sir Ronald as among the Caribbean’s most accomplished diplomats, noting that he currently serves as Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the United States and the Organisation of American States (OAS) and has served three terms as President of the OAS Permanent Council.

The government said his experience in multilateral diplomacy and scholarship, particularly on small states, could help advance UG’s academic stature and global reach, especially as Guyana invests heavily in human capital and builds a stronger knowledge economy.

“The Government of Guyana welcomes the appointment of Sir Ronald Sanders as Chancellor of the University of Guyana,” the statement added.
