Police are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 32-year-old woman on Sunday night along the Greenfield Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Dead is Mathana Cambridge, a self-employed resident of Ann’s Grove, who was driving motor car PAE 6337 when the crash occurred at about 21:00hrs, Police said.
A 27-year-old female teacher, also from Ann’s Grove, was injured in the accident and remains under observation at the hospital.
According to preliminary investigations, the car was travelling west along the southern lane when the driver allegedly swerved south to avoid a herd of cows on the roadway.
Police said the vehicle then lost control, slammed into a concrete light pole on the southern parapet, and ended up in a nearby trench. Both women were reportedly pulled from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital.
Police said Cambridge was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty, while the 27-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries and is being monitored.
