Police in Berbice have launched an investigation into the alleged murder of Chen Yongping, a 61-year-old businessman, who was stabbed to death during what investigators believe was a robbery at Cumberland Village, East Canje, early Monday morning.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the attack occurred on Monday, at about 05:00 hrs, and also left a 32-year-old businessman from the same address injured.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two men had returned home after travelling earlier that morning when they were confronted by two identifiable males, both reportedly armed with knives. Police said the suspects allegedly robbed the men of a quantity of Guyana currency and mobile phones.

During the confrontation, both victims sustained injuries, including stab wounds, and were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Police said Yongping later succumbed to his injuries while receiving care. The injured 32-year-old was treated and subsequently discharged, according to investigators.

Yongping’s body is at a funeral parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police said the suspects are being sought as the investigation continues.
