A month after Police Corporal Anthony Cheddi Singh was struck down while on duty at Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD), his mother, Sarita Singh, is still waiting for him to regain consciousness.

The corporal remains critically ill at the Lima Hospital following the September 28 collision on the Buxton Public Road.

“I would like justice to be done,” his mother said, as she described the injuries that have left her son unresponsive.

Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh, confirmed that the driver, Priamnauth Persaud, of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, had been arrested and subsequently released on station bail.

Persaud was charged on Wednesday with drunk driving. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $100,000 bail.

The Traffic Chief said the matter remains under active investigation.

Sarita recalled that the family was at home when a telephone call brought news of the accident. Initially, they did not realise how badly her son had been injured.

“But we didn’t know it was such a serious accident until later we heard that it was critical,” she said.

According to his mother, the corporal sustained a severe brain injury, fractures to his ribs, pelvis and shoulder, and injuries to his lungs.

Since then, the family has been hoping for a change in his condition.

“But right now, he’s not responding to nothing,” she said.

Sarita also recalled being told that investigators were awaiting an improvement in her son’s condition that would allow him to provide information about the incident.
