Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has been arrested in connection with an alleged payment for surveillance footage linked to the shooting incident outside Senior Superintendent Prem Narine’s home, his attorney Damien DaSilva has confirmed.
DaSilva said Mohamed was arrested at 12th Street, Eccles, and subsequently taken to police facilities. He remained in custody at the Kitty Police Station without charge at the time of the attorney’s remarks.
Questioned about the allegation that Mohamed paid a police constable $800,000 for the footage, DaSilva said his client had received videos from several sources, including senior police officers.
“At this point, we know of no such allegation of paying any money to any police constable,” the attorney said.
He also maintained that Mohamed did not know the constable allegedly involved.
“Mr. Mohamed does not know this young man. No, he does not know this constable,” DaSilva said.
According to the attorney, the video made public was a compilation of footage obtained from different people, rather than a single recording acquired from the constable.
DaSilva declined to identify the sources, saying their information would remain private and confidential.
The attorney also argued that, even if the constable had received money, the matter should be handled departmentally rather than through criminal charges.
Despite that argument, DaSilva said the defence was preparing for the possibility of Mohamed being charged.
“I anticipate and expect him to be charged,” he said, adding that the legal team would be ready if Mohamed were brought before the court.
The investigation concerns footage of the October 12 incident outside Narine’s Barr Street, Kitty residence. Narine heads the Police Force’s Special Branch and has been giving evidence in the extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.
In their earlier account, police said Narine noticed a car travelling slowly past his home shortly before midnight. When the vehicle returned, he reportedly heard what appeared to be a gunshot, took cover and fired his service weapon towards it.
Police subsequently intercepted the vehicle and arrested Mohamed and two other occupants. Investigators reported recovering a firearm and ammunition from the car.
