A 29-year-old Albouystown man is in police custody following an armed robbery of a Turkish national along Lombard Street, Georgetown, during the early hours of Tuesday.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the robbery occurred at approximately 12:05 a.m. while the 38-year-old victim, who resides at Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was standing on the western pavement of Lombard Street.

According to preliminary investigations, the man was approached by two suspects, one travelling on foot and the other riding a black XR motorcycle.

Police said the motorcyclist dismounted, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim before taking away his cellular phone. At the same time, the second suspect reportedly snatched a yellow metal chain from the victim before escaping.

However, the victim immediately alerted police ranks who were nearby, prompting a search of the surrounding area.

During the operation, ranks apprehended a 29-year-old unemployed man from Albouystown, Georgetown, along with a black XR motorcycle bearing registration number CM 2595.

A search of the suspect reportedly uncovered a cellular phone concealed in his pants. The victim subsequently identified the device as the phone stolen from him during the robbery.

Police have since lodged the recovered phone and motorcycle as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect remains in custody as investigators continue their efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery.
