An 18-year-old police constable was robbed of two gold chains valued at approximately $600,000 by a masked gunman while socialising with friends at Britton Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Tuesday night.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the robbery occurred around 10:15 p.m. when an unidentified man armed with a handgun approached the constable and snatched the chains from his neck.
The chains had a combined weight of 68 pennyweights, police said. The suspect then fled towards the eastern side of the street. During his escape, several loud explosions suspected to be gunshots were heard, causing the constable and his friends to scatter.
Police said the suspect entered a waiting silver motor car, which travelled north along the roadway. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area as they seek to identify the perpetrator.
No arrests have been made. Investigations are continuing.
