A 37-year-old security guard was shot dead while on duty at a Chinese supermarket on Sussex Street, Georgetown, on Thursday afternoon.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) identified him as Esan Rose, of Laing Avenue, Georgetown.
According to preliminary investigations, Rose was performing security duties around 3:15 p.m. on October 8 when two men approached him. One was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Police said the gunman allegedly fired a round at Rose, striking him in the chest and causing him to collapse. Both suspects then fled the area.
A firearm Rose was carrying as part of his duties as an armed security guard was recovered at the scene and lodged by investigators.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack or indicated whether anything was stolen. The statement also did not say whether any arrests had been made.
The incident is being investigated as an alleged murder.
