A 40-year-old chef from Georgetown was fined $20,000 on Monday after admitting that she imported 10 dogs into Guyana without the required permit.
Elizebath Chung, called “Liza,” of Albertown and Alexander Village, Georgetown, was arrested on November 22, 2025, at the Bina Hill Police Checkpoint in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), after checks revealed she was transporting the animals without proper documentation.
Chung was subsequently charged with importing a terrestrial animal without a permit, contrary to Section 22(1) and Section 40(1)(a) of the Animal Health Act No. 7 of 2011.
She appeared at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court, before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan. The charge was read to her, and she pleaded guilty. Chung was fined $20,000 or, in default, will face the penalty prescribed by law.
