The number of bodies recovered from the MV Barima tragedy has risen to 72, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips confirmed in his latest update on the ongoing search, rescue and recovery operation.
Phillips said two more bodies were recovered on Thursday, while 65 of the bodies recovered so far have been identified by relatives.
He also disclosed that technical teams are continuing efforts to reposition the MV Barima as part of the broader recovery mission.
According to the Prime Minister, the operation remains active, with 22 assets deployed. These include 19 vessels and three aircraft assisting in the search and recovery efforts.
Aerial searches are also continuing across a search zone that now covers 2,100 square kilometres and extends as far as Waini Point.
Phillips warned members of the public against flying unauthorised drones in the search area, saying such activity is prohibited because it can endanger aircraft involved in critical aerial operations.
The Prime Minister said the Government continues to stand with grieving families and all those affected by the tragedy. He assured that every available resource will remain deployed until the operation reaches a safe and dignified conclusion.
He also noted that Government ministers joined relatives, friends and communities in Regions One, Three, Four and Six to pay final respects at the funerals of several victims.
As Guyana continues to mourn, a Night of Reflection and Prayer was scheduled for Port Kaituma on Thursday evening, with another observance planned for Mabaruma on Friday, July 24.
The search and recovery operation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to bring closure to the families affected by the MV Barima tragedy.
