A Glasgow Housing Scheme family has been plunged into grief following the tragic drowning of a six-year-old boy in the Edinburgh backlands, East Bank Berbice, on Sunday afternoon.
The child, identified as Kayden Busey, reportedly left home with his two brothers, aged four and eight, and later went to a nearby trench where they met up with two other children.
According to Kayden’s mother, Gaynor Paul, she was unaware that her sons had left the house. She only learned of their whereabouts after receiving information that the children had gone swimming in the area.
Reports indicate that while the children were in the water, Kayden suddenly disappeared beneath the surface. His older brother reportedly made several attempts to locate him but was unsuccessful.
As news of the incident spread, family members and residents mobilised to search the trench and surrounding area.
Paul said she rushed to the location after being informed that her son was missing. Despite frantic efforts by relatives and villagers, the search continued for some time before a family member discovered the child’s body in the water shortly after 15:00 hrs.
The grieving mother recounted desperately trying to revive her son before he was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, medical personnel later pronounced him dead.
Kayden was a Grade One pupil of All Saints Primary School. Family members described him as a cheerful and affectionate child whose presence brought happiness to those around him.
Struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, Paul said the loss of her son has left a deep void in the family.
She noted that she had repeatedly warned her children about the dangers of swimming in the trench and is now urging parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children, particularly during school breaks and weekends.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted as investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
