A 29-year-old woman lost her life late Sunday night after the car she was travelling in crashed into a parked motor lorry along the Sarah Johanna Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Dead is Lisa Blackman, 29, of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.

According to police, the fatal accident occurred at about 10:40 p.m. and involved motor lorry GAJ 4979 and motor car PNN 7493.

Initial investigations revealed that the motor car, driven by a 42-year-old man of Turkeyen, was proceeding north along the western side of the Sarah Johanna Access Road at a reportedly high rate of speed when the driver allegedly lost control and collided with the left-rear portion of the parked lorry.

As a result of the collision, the driver and two occupants of the car sustained injuries.

Blackman, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was pulled from the wrecked vehicle by public-spirited citizens along with the driver and taken to the New Diamond Regional Hospital under police escort.

She was examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival. Police said the driver was later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention.

The other occupant, a 36-year-old miner of Quamina Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters. He was subsequently taken to the New Diamond Regional Hospital, where he remains a patient.

Blackman’s body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigators said CCTV cameras were observed in the area, and the footage will be reviewed as part of the probe.

No breathalyser test was conducted on the driver because of the severity of his injuries.
