A 24-year-old food vendor was robbed at gunpoint on Bent Street, Georgetown, on Sunday morning, but a struggle with one of the suspects ended with a firearm falling to the ground and one of the alleged bandits being captured by members of the public.
Police said the incident occurred at about 11:50 a.m. According to preliminary investigations, the vendor was at his food stand when two men arrived on a black Honda XR motorcycle.
Police said the pillion rider, who was armed with a firearm, got off the bike, approached the vendor, and demanded his belongings. The victim reportedly handed over a gold chain valued at $200,000, but a scuffle then broke out between him and the armed suspect.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly discharged two rounds, and the firearm fell to the ground.
Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist the vendor, and one of the suspects was apprehended, while the other escaped on the motorcycle in an eastern direction along Bent Street.
When police patrol ranks arrived at the scene, they recovered a Smith and Wesson .40 pistol along with a magazine containing three live rounds of .40 ammunition.
One spent .40 shell was also found and taken into custody. The suspect, who was held, sustained injuries during the ordeal and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains under police guard, receiving medical attention.
Police said CCTV cameras in the area were observed and will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The firearm, ammunition, and spent shell have been lodged, while the second suspect is still being sought.
Investigations are ongoing.
