A contractor was arrested on Wednesday night after prison officers intercepted an attempt to smuggle more than two kilograms of cannabis into the Mazaruni Prison.
The suspect has been identified as Meshano Sinclair, a construction worker attached to Griffons Engineering Company.
According to prison authorities, the attempted smuggling was uncovered at about 8:30 p.m. on May 14 at the Mazaruni Prison checkpoint after Sinclair returned to the compound.
During a search, officers reportedly discovered 2,087 grams of cannabis concealed in his bag. Sinclair was immediately arrested and handed over to the police at Bartica, where he was escorted to the Bartica Police Station.
Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said any person attempting to smuggle contraband into a prison facility will be caught and placed before the courts.
He warned that contraband poses a serious threat to the safety and security of prison staff, inmates, and the wider public, and urged persons not to become involved in such activity.
Elliot also commended the prison officers on duty for their vigilance, saying their alertness led directly to the discovery of the narcotics and Sinclair’s arrest.
