More than 6,800 people successfully signed up for the Government’s $100,000 Cash Grant within the first 24 hours of the online registration portal becoming available, according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh.

In an update on the programme, Dr. Singh said 6,834 persons had completed the self-registration process, while another 12,889 users had created accounts and were at various stages of completing their applications.

The online platform, launched on Thursday, was designed to enable eligible Guyanese to register for the cash grant from home. The portal is available at cashgrant.gov.gy.

Dr. Singh also noted that the government had already transferred the grant to 48,858 central government employees, including public servants, teachers, and members of the disciplined services, through direct deposits made last Friday.

He said the high level of activity on the portal showed strong public interest in the initiative, although the heavy traffic also slowed response times in some instances.

According to the Finance Minister, the volume of users during the initial period affected the system’s speed, but he expects performance to improve as traffic levels become more manageable, particularly during off-peak hours.

He encouraged members of the public not to become discouraged if they were unable to complete registration on their first attempt, stressing that the system would remain open.

Dr. Singh explained that applicants must create an account, provide personal information such as their address and telephone number, submit details from a national identification card, passport, or electronic ID, complete a facial recognition or “aliveness” check, and then enter their banking information.

He said the government continues to prefer bank account payments, as they allow the cash grant to be transferred directly to beneficiaries without their having to travel.

Still, he assured that persons without bank accounts would not be excluded from the programme.

Alternative arrangements, he said, will be made for those who do not have accounts or do not wish to use one, though those persons may eventually have to leave home to collect the grant.

To help persons who encounter technical or registration difficulties, Dr. Singh said the government has put help desk systems and hotline numbers in place.

He also advised applicants to try accessing the portal at times when usage may be lighter, including later in the evening.

The minister said the administration remains committed to ensuring that every eligible Guyanese who qualifies under the programme is able to register and receive the grant announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali and included in Budget 2026.
