Police are investigating the theft of $7 million from a Chinese businesswoman at Durban Backlands, Georgetown, with a 16-year-old labourer among four persons now in custody.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the alleged simple larceny occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and involved a 35-year-old Chinese national who operates in the area.

Initial investigations revealed that the woman had left a black plastic bag containing cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus while she supervised the offloading of a nearby container.

Police said the vehicle was left unlocked. Investigators allege that during that time, a 16-year-old labourer of Durban Backlands entered the vehicle and removed the bag, which reportedly contained $7 million.

CCTV footage obtained by police allegedly showed the suspect entering the vehicle and later leaving with a bulky black plastic bag. Following the report, police conducted searches in Durban Backlands and recovered $4.39 million.

The money was counted in the presence of the suspects and later lodged with the police.

Four people were arrested and taken to the East La Penitence Police Station. They are a 16-year-old male, a 46-year-old female vendor, a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant, and a 38-year-old male labourer. Police investigations are continuing.
