The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is calling for renewed commitment to tolerance, inclusion, and mutual respect as Guyana joins the international community in observing the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21.

In a press statement, the Commission said this year’s observance is being held under the theme, “Mobilizing Political Will: 60 Years of Commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,” and serves as a reminder of both the progress made globally and the work still required to confront racial prejudice.

The ERC said that in Guyana, where ethnic diversity remains central to the country’s identity, social harmony must be deliberately cultivated through understanding, respect, and inclusive engagement.

It noted that promoting peaceful relations among the country’s ethnic groups remains central to its constitutional mandate and is critical to national development.

According to the Commission, it has rolled out a number of initiatives over the past year to build awareness and encourage responsible social behaviour. These efforts included school and community outreach across the country, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training in both the public and private sectors, as well as media monitoring and investigations into racially offensive or prejudicial remarks, particularly on digital platforms.

The ERC also warned that new challenges continue to emerge, especially on online platforms, and urged citizens to be responsible in their public commentary and interactions. It said all Guyanese have a role to play in promoting understanding and respect in society.

As part of the observance, the Commission called for stronger collaboration among state agencies, civil society, the private sector, and communities to uphold the values of tolerance and inclusion.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to helping build a Guyana where diversity is respected, differences are better understood, and all citizens can live together in peace and harmony.
