Police have issued an official account of the fatal Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) crash that left 55-year-old Deryck Singh dead on Saturday night, saying his car swerved into the path of an oncoming lorry before a second collision moments later.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the accident occurred at about 9:10 pm along Greenwich Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, and involved motor car PXX 9053 driven by Singh, motor lorry GAB 5416 driven by a 31-year-old man of Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD), and motor lorry GAF 6756 driven by a 21-year-old man of Cornelia Ida.

According to police, both lorries were proceeding east along the northern side of the roadway when Singh’s car, which was travelling west in the centre of the road between the northern and southern lanes, allegedly swerved north into the path of lorry GAB 5416 and collided with the vehicle’s right-side rear wheel.

Police said the impact caused Singh’s car to lose control and end up on the southern lane facing west. Lorry GAF 6756, which was also travelling east, reportedly swerved onto the southern lane in an effort to avoid the crash but collided head-on with the car.

The Police Force said Singh was pinned inside the vehicle with injuries to his body and was removed from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition. He was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body has since been taken to the Ezekiel Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police also revealed that a breathalyser test conducted on the driver of lorry GAB 5416 detected 071 and 072 micrograms of alcohol in his breath, while the driver of lorry GAF 6756 recorded 05 micrograms.

Both lorry drivers are in police custody assisting with the investigation, and the vehicles involved have been impounded pending examination. Investigations are ongoing.
