A Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident was arrested on Tuesday after prison officers at the Lusignan Prison thwarted an attempt to smuggle cannabis into the facility.
According to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), the man, identified as Timothy McGarrell, was intercepted during routine checks at the prison’s checkpoint on the East Coast of Demerara. Officers carried out a thorough search and discovered a quantity of cannabis concealed under the soles of his slippers, the GPS said.
Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot commended the officers for their vigilance and issued a warning to would-be traffickers, stressing that attempts to take contraband into the prison will be detected.
McGarrell was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police, where he is expected to be charged in relation to the incident.
