The Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA), working alongside the Guyana Police Force (GPF), has intensified efforts to safeguard children with a coordinated “Street Light Activity” targeting loitering at major public transportation hubs during school hours.

In a statement, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security said the exercise was carried out on Monday with ranks from the Stabroek Police Outpost partnering with personnel from the CPA’s South and North District teams, including Director Levine Gouveia.

Joint patrols were conducted along several key bus routes and transportation hubs, including the East/West, South, Lamaha, and Kitty bus routes.

During the operation, officials engaged 30 students, interacting with them to verify whether they were attending school, understand the circumstances that led them to be at the bus parks during instructional hours, and reinforce the importance of consistent attendance.

The CPA noted that regular school participation remains a critical foundation for children’s development and long-term success, and that the initiative is also intended to promote students’ safety and welfare while discouraging unsupervised presence at public hubs.

According to the agency, the Street Light Activity will now be conducted daily as part of ongoing efforts to promote school attendance and strengthen collaboration among agencies responsible for protecting children.
