Pomeroon boat collision leaves pensioner dead

A 71-year-old man is dead following a boat collision on the Upper Pomeroon River at Kabakaburi, Essequibo, and police have taken the other boat operator into custody as investigations continue.

Dead is Felix Smith, a pensioner of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the mishap occurred at about 15:30hrs on Monday, February 9, 2026, when a wooden boat operated by a 36-year-old woman of Karawab Village was proceeding along the river with two passengers.

Investigators said a collision reportedly occurred with another wooden boat captained by Smith, who also had a female occupant in his boat at the time.

As a result of the collision, Smith was found unconscious in his boat and was taken to the Karawab Health Centre. He was later transferred to the Charity Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The man’s body was subsequently taken to the Charity Cottage Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The other boat operator is in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
